SALT ALERT-ANDROID MOBILE APP FOR SODIUM LEVEL VISUALIZATION

Salt Alert- is a Android Mobile app helping parents to keep track of their children's sodium intake. High sodium intake has been found to be associated with . The process, deliverable and tools are explained below. This was a year long individual project under guidance of Professor Kay Connelly.

RESEARCH

PRIMARY PREVENTION OF DISEASE at early age was the motivation behind this project. The project started with a qualitative study to understand the issues and efforts of parents to keep children aged between 6 to 12 years healthy at home. Consultation with dietician's at IU health center, literature review helped us to understand the potential questions which could be asked during the qualitative interview sessions. 16 parents volunteered to be a part of the 45 minutes interview sessions. Grounded theory along with existing design process( B.J Fogg's Design process) were applied to arrive at research insights and structure the design process. DESIGN PROCESS

The design insights were finalized with the help of early concepts as well as insights from the interviews. Various early concepts were evaluated. A concept which was voted out at early stage due to technical limitations was a device helping parents track fruits and vegetables available in local market and prepare a shopping list. Below are some screenshots reflecting our iterative design process. These concepts were formalized keeping in mind the existing applications and software's in market for nutrient measurement, one of the competitor's was the mypyramid.gov website from USDA.

FINAL DESIGN

After 5 phases on redesign and evaluation we concluded the project with a fully functional prototype on a Android mobile device. For this prototype we conducted usability evaluation with 5 participants. Some of the heuristics will help us understand the usability behind the interface are touch pad usage, icon sizes, the text size visibility to the end users. 4 of the 5 participants understood the workflow for the application and the information architecture involved.
